Route: Ilulissat to Resolute |
Notes:
- Depart Disko Bay via the Vaigat if weather and ice permit, alternate route around west side of Disko Island adds approx 15 miles. Vaigat preferred option for scenery only, does not necessary provide shelter, especially if wind is NW.
- Clear Nussuta by at least 2 nm.
- Upernavik to Kap York track lies between the pack and shore fast ice.
- According to Sailing directions the lead from Disko Bay and the recurring polynya in Smith Sound join in the last week of July.
- Lancaster Sound has a strong east flowing current along its southern shore and a weaker west flowing current along northern shore.
- Arctic Bay an option.

Notes:
- The 2006 navigation season saw the ice in the majority of Peel Sound clear by the 7-8th August allowing navigation in the southern region. However there was 7/10th or greater at the junction of Barrow Strait and Peel Sound for the greater part of the season and thus Peel Sound did not "open up" in reasonable time for an east - west transit. Prince Regent Inlet however was clear and it appears that navigation was possible through Bellot Strait from about the 9th of August (See Alternate Route below). Lancaster did not consolidate during the 2005/06 winter (when it has in previous winters) and this seems to be the key factor in this scenario.
- Ice conditions in the approach to Resolute, combined with options available as per the note above will determine if Tyhina calls there at all, although it is preferable to take on fuel and water. In the case that Resolute looks unlikely Arctic Bay is an option to resupply if necessary.
- It is extremely important that ice conditions are favorable between Franklin Strait and Gjoa Haven (ie south of the exit from Bellot Strait) as we do not want to become ice bound in this area.

Notes:
- Beware of abandoned off shore oil rigs and survey mounds in the vicinity of Prudhoe Bay - not all may be on chart, not all lighted.
- From the Arctic Pilot with regard to the weather at Point Barrow “July is the warmest month of the year, with a normal mean of 40°F (4.4°C). The record high for the station is 79°F (26.1°C) recorded in July 1993”. Expect temperatures for September to be somewhat below the yearly high.
